As China boasts EV sales of 9.5. million and gobbles up 8% of EU market share, the issue is taking on a higher profile in US politics. With a presidential election approaching in November, US President Joe Biden is seen further tightening protectionist measures meant to counter Chinese EVs. GOP challenger former US President Donald Trump, who has been vocally critical of EVs generally, is harder to predict — pledging to enact 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs assembled in US trading partner Mexico, while also hinting at inviting Chinese automakers to build in the US.
